Being the Second

face paint kid
I really feel for Zoe (since I'm also the second of two). Aidan is older and by that measure he gets to do everything first. This past weekend he went to one of those parties where you build your own bear, followed by (Aidan and Zoe's favorite activity) face painting and cake. Zoe on the other hand, got an oh so very exciting nap. To put insult to injury, she woke up in time for me race to the party only to find that the face painter had already packed up. She spent the next 15 minutes saying, "paint... paint... paint..." while making the more gesture in sign language. Her consolation prize was Birthday cake. She had one of several possible takeaways from this entire experience:
  • Aidan gets to do fun stuff while I get to sleep
  • Daddy sucks (I made the rookie mistake of telling her to get ready quickly so we could get face paint)
  • When you are disappointed, drown your sorrows in food: cake, ice cream, or any other sweet unhealthy food
Fortunately, she did seem content on taking the box that was the size of her, out to the car. I'm debating taking a morning off each week to have some "us time" and maybe even commiserate with what it is like to be the second. If anyone else has suggestions, please let me know.

Technical Photography Note: The most interesting thing is that both of these photos were taken with Canon's 50mm f1.2 L lens. "L" stands for "loan" because you have to take one out to buy one of these things or sacrifice the kids' college fund. The lens itself is like having a kid - it takes a long time to really get to know and is "a child that only a mother could love". It tends to back focus at very specific settings which I've memorized and now adjust manually, weighs a ton (like lifting your two year old who insists on being carried instead of walking) and sometimes just misses the shot completely (like a toddler throwing a tantrum). But, it's also great at getting a nice candid shot, in a poorly lit mall, with a thousand people walking around on the first try.
