While the technical aspects of photography are the easiest to write about, it's really the intangibles that make a great photograph. There's always room for improvement but here are three things I do with every photo shoot:
- Make it fun. Making the baby and subjects at ease is the biggest part of my job. The only way I know how to do that is to make people and kids alike laugh. Beautiful photographs follow naturally. I guess I could also use ice cream...
- Make it real. While it's easier to get a more technically correct photo in a studio complete with three point lighting (key, fill and background), the context of home and familiar surroundings is important for making a memorable photograph and results in effortless smiles. Here, the parents did such a beautiful job painting the walls of the nursery it felt like a shame to exclude it from their photos.
- Make it quick. Whether it's because of the realities of nap time (the baby's or my own), the busy schedule my clients keep or the fact that we're all exhausted after an hour of fun, the sessions gotta be quick.
This Wednesday/Thursday, we'll resume our regular posting on being an amateur parent (as opposed to a professional photographer).
